Greetings from Coach Gene Clemons aka Orunmila: Orisha (Deity) of Wisdom, Knowledge, and Destiny

Does anyone else feel like the Oscars are just not being discussed right now? Am I tripping, am I too early, or am I just old and don’t realize that these Gen Z-ers are just too cool for it?

It is mid-April and the Oscars are not until late March (March 22nd to be exact). But it feels as if there is just not enough hype around this year’s Academy Awards. Well maybe, just maybe, we have fallen on the perfect time to dig into what the movie market has to offer before the massive interest picks back up.

For one, I have been fascinated by how the movie Sinners will be celebrated at the Oscars. We know they made Academy history by being nominated 16 times, but how many of them will they win? If history has something to say they will be forgotten like it’s 2017 and Warren Beatty has the card in his hands (Google it).

With movies like One Battle After Another and Marty Supreme out there, and more visual spectacles like Avatar: Fire and Ash and F1, how many Oscars do we really believe Sinners takes home?

Now if you are feeling optimistic that Sinners could break through the glass ceiling and clean up like Kendrick Lamar at the Grammys, “Exactly 5” is where you want to lay your money. This is trading at 12 cents which is close to 7.5:1.

Like Dorothy on the yellow brick road, there is a legitimate path to five Oscars for Sinners.

Let’s break it down

The Big Five will be tough to win, especially Best Picture and Best Screenplay. So Sinners will likely get rewarded with some of the technical awards.

Look for them to win Best Original Score (the music was such a big part of the movie that this seems to be a no brainer), Best Production Design (the 1932 Mississippi Delta setting was a cinematic marvel, chef’s kiss), and Best Makeup & Hairstyling (all of those characters were fried, dyed, and laid to the side).

That’s three!

Best Supporting Actor should go to Delroy Lindo who is not only a great actor, but a sentimental favorite to win the award. He probably should already have an award for his portrayal of West Indian Archie in Malcolm X.

That’s four!

The interesting one will be Best Director. That will be a fight, but director Ryan Coogler is the favorite and he would make history as the first black filmmaker to win in the category. We know how much the academy likes a good story.

That’s five!

Or…

Now, I’m not praying on anyone’s downfall, but far be it from me to miss out on the opportunity to watch as cinematic genius and Cultural Masterpiece get overlooked for a hapless stoner who used to be a freedom fighter, race cars and extinction-level amounts of testosterone, animatronics, and the story of a ping-pong legend who’s not the greatest person in the world.

For starters, “exactly 1” is trading at four cents , which is approximately 23 times your money; definitely go and sprinkle something there just in case the Academy is downright disrespectful.

The real value seems to be with exactly 2 (trading at 18 cents) and exactly 3 (trading at 20 cents) if you are feeling pessimistic about the wins for this film; these both yield 5:1 on your investment.

Also while you’re at it, go ahead and throw something on these lottery tickets in hopes that they finally get it right:

  • Exactly 7 At two cents

  • Exactly 8 At two cents

  • Exactly 9 At two cents

  • Exactly 10 At a penny

All of them will yield 46x or more on your money.

Penny stocks make the world go round. Just don’t go putting the mortgage on it.

Whether hope springs eternal or you are preparing yourself for the usual hits, you have action. Action may not play well at the Oscars but we love it here.
